Centre – Successfully rescued fiancée of Australian citizen speaks
out for the first time outside New South Wales State Parliament. Li Ying
was rescued after being illegally imprisoned for two years in Shanghai’s
Qingsong Women’s labour camp, simply for practising Falun Gong. She arrived
in Sydney two weeks ago.

A motion raised by Democrat Senator Natasha Stott Despoja on the Falun
Gong issue was passed by the Senate in Canberra on Monday 1st December
2003.

“Now Ying can stand aside me and share in the freedom enjoyed by
every Australian.” Said Mr Grant Lu, Li Ying’s fiancée.

Ms Li and Mr Lu would like to thank the Australian government, media and public
for their support leading to the safe arrival of Li Ying in Australia. Ms Li’s
Spouse-Visa application was expedited in one week, where the normal processing
period is thirty-five weeks.

Over 20,000 signatures were collected from the Australian public as part of
the national ‘Rescue Family Members’ Campaign this year to raise awareness about
the illegal detention in China of Australian family members.

Background: Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, is a practice of meditation
and exercises with teachings based on the universal principle of “Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance.”
It was introduced to the public in 1992, and quickly spread by word of mouth
throughout China. It is now practiced in over 60 countries worldwide.

Since China’s President Jiang Zemin outlawed the peaceful practice in July
1999, 823 Falun Gong practitioners have been tortured to death, including three
family members of Australian citizens. Nine family members of Australian citizens
are currently detained in Chinese labour camps, all facing the threat of torture.
