Refugee Awareness Week – Organised by Waverly Council

Bondi Beach Pavilion 12-24th October 2004

The
Waverly Council is hosting a series of events to bring attention to the hardships
suffered by refugees who are escaping persecution in their homelands.

This
year’s theme at Bondi Pavilion is focusing on oppression suffered by Falun Gong
practitioners in China. Since July 1999 hundreds have attempted to escape persecution
and seek refuge overseas as State-sanctioned genocide continues against the group.

The
event will be launched on Wednesday October 13th at 6:30pm with a traditional
Chinese painting exhibit by world-renowned Chinese artist, Ms Zhang Cui Ying,
an Australian and also a victim of persecution in China.

Keynote speakers
at the events include Waverley Council members, academics, volunteer refugee advocates
and members of various community groups.
