On 28 February 2005, a second Status Conference is scheduled for the landmark case in the Supreme Court of NSW where the defendants, Jiang Zemin and the 610 Office*, and the plaintiff are called to appear before the Registrar. The civil case was filed in September 2004 by Australian artist and Falun Gong practitioner Ms Zhang Cuiying for torture and inhuman treatment, which she received during an illegal 8-month imprisonment in Shenzhen, China in 1999-2000.
Outside the courtroom, the Chinese Communist Party, on behalf of Jiang, has been putting pressure on our government to dismiss the case, disregarding the integrity and impartiality of our judicial system. Inside the courtroom, the defendants have yet to appear or to be represented, as requested.
Internationally, this is the most extensive human rights legal action since World War II and a major turning point towards ending the suffering of millions in China because they practise five simple exercises and believe in Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance.
