Media briefing on human rights abuses in China

Sydney, August 12, 2002 (Falun Dafa Information Centre) To coincide with the 6th Annual Bilateral China-Australia Human Rights Dialogue being held in Canberra during the week 12th to 16th August, witnesses to human rights abuses of Falun Gong practitioners in China will be holding a media briefing. The briefing will be hosted by Ms Kerrie Tucker, ACT Greens MLA.

John Greenwell, a member of Amnesty International’s Federal Government Liaison Group, will give a short speech on the bilateral dialogue and Falun Gong.

Six Chinese born Australian residents who are practitioners of Falun Gong will give personal accounts of the persecution they and their family have experienced in China.

Cr Jamie Parker, Deputy Mayor of Leichardt City Council will give a videotaped account of police beating Falun Gong practitioners, that he witnessed in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square just a few months ago.

All present at the briefing will be available for interviews and questions following the event.

Background
Falun Gong combines a set of easy to learn exercises, meditation and scriptures, and is taught free worldwide. The system helps people who practice it to cultivate truthfulness, compassion and tolerance, and also offers great health benefits. There are approximately 100 million people practicing Falun Gong worldwide.
