Bomb Threat and Physical Assaults
Escalating Attacks on Falun Gong in Australia Hit New Level

Recent violent and threatening incidents against Falun Gong practitioners in Australia have prompted urgent concern about a growing pattern of transnational repression linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The incidents mark the most serious escalation of intimidation against this community on Australian soil in more than two decades.

On 23 November, the organisers of a Sydney film screening exposing forced organ harvesting in China received a bomb threat — the first such threat ever directed at a Falun-Gong-related event in Australia.

The anonymous message published on the event’s Eventbrite page claimed that a bomb had been planted in St John the Evangelist Church, Campbelltown, and demanded the event be cancelled. The local Campbelltown Police conducted a full inspection of the site, but found no threat to the public. However, the seriousness of the incident has alarmed both authorities and the broader community.

Days later on 25 November in Canberra, Falun Gong practitioners peacefully protesting the visit of Chinese official Zhao Leji, Chairman of the National People’s Congress, were physically attacked. Multiple practitioners were assaulted, including one who was chased down a public street, grabbed, and had his clothing ripped. Witnesses describe the attacks as coordinated and deliberate.

These events reflect patterns witnessed in other countries, where diaspora communities advocating for human rights have been subjected to intimidation, harassment, and violence by CCP agents.

I am shocked and saddened to receive this bomb threat message. It is another example of CCP transnational repression extending to Australia. These latest incidents are indicating an alarming new level of threat to the very core values and freedoms we have here,” said Dr Lucy Zhao, President of the Falun Dafa Association of Australia.

“This is much more than just a Falun Gong case or Chinese human rights issue now. Such transnational repression is challenging and undermining Australian fundamental rights.”

“We acknowledge the distress these events have caused the affected practitioners and the broader Falun Gong community. We express our concern for their safety and well-being, and we recognise the importance of ensuring that all Australians — regardless of belief — can engage in peaceful expression without fear,” added Dr Zhao.
