Text of report by Radio Australia on 24 June
The leader of Australia’s minor political party, the Democrats, has
launched
a campaign to rescue people being held in Chinese prisons and labour
camps
for practising Falun Gong. Falun Gong has been banned in China since
1999.
Senator Andrew Bartlett addressed hundreds of people who gathered
outside
federal parliament to support the movement. He says the international community should do what it can to
ensure
fair treatment of practitioners being held in Chinese prisons.
[Bartlett] We need to allow independent observers in to monitor the
condition of prisoners in jails and finally to monitor the trials of
those
prisoners to ensure that those trials are legal and fair.
