On the 30th of April 2003, Australian Dafa practitioner Jane Dai, together with Hungarian and Austrian practitioners, met with a member of the Budapest-Helsinki Committee. She gave the committee details about how her husband was tortured to death because he refused to stop practising Falun Gong in China.
Since the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999, Chengyong Chen had exercised his legal right to appeal against the persecution at the Appeal’s Office in Beijing several times. He was frequently arrested, sent to detention centres and forced to attend brainwashing classes. To protect his family from persecution, he eventually chose to leave home. Even then, he continued to appeal . Chengyong’s body was eventually found in an abandoned hut in July 2001. Only when Jiang’s regime was put under pressure by the Australian government did Ms. Dai receive her husband’s ashes.
