ABC Radio Australia: Australia to raise human rights at annual talks with China

From BBC Monitoring Asia Pacific – Political
PUBLICATION DATE: 08/13/2002

China and Australia will tomorrow hold a bilateral dialogue on
the rights of ethnic and religious minorities. Australia says it
will raise concerns about freedom in Tibet, the treatment of Falun Gong movement and individual human rights cases.

The meeting in Canberra is the sixth round of annual bilateral
talks.

Australia’s foreign minister, Alexander Downer, says the dialogue is a sign of Australia’s practical approach to human rights.

The Chinese delegation is being led by a vice-minister of foreign affairs, Wang Guangya.
