By a western practitioner in NSW
In the middle of 2000 my dad was battling prostrate cancer and a one dodgy heart needing a urgent by-pass operation. At the same time my brother and mother each managed to break a leg. As for myself I’d been diagnosed with secondary melanoma in the lungs. Not bad for a family of 5. Most of the time all we could do was sit around and laugh at each other.
In March of that year x-rays showed the growths in my lungs and the doctors performed two successful operations in April and August. However the volatile nature of secondary melanoma meant my chances were 30 to 50 percent making it beyond 5 years with relapses being probable and impossible to prevent if it was going to happen.
Prior to diagnosis I’d been feeling pretty sick for quite a while. The skin surface primary cancer was never found and it seems the secondary was sitting there for a few years while I thought ‘Chronic fatigue syndrome’ was making me feel constantly off-colour. As a consequence, during that time I tried every form and type of alternative therapy to find some sense of healthy equilibrium. While some were good, some whacky, most were expensive and just propping me through one not-so-good day to the next.
Not long after the second operation I came across two Chinese-Australians who were handing out pamphlets with information about the qigong practice meditation and exercise practice known as Falun Dafa (or Falun Gong). A couple of things struck me; firstly was the bearing of peace and good health that radiated from these people, secondly the pamphlets stressed in conjunction with the exercises that practitioners adhered to the principles of Truth-Compassion-Forbearance.
Furthermore exercise instruction was free; it was warming that such positive things were being passed on with no thought or concern for profit beyond only wanting to help others – just as the people organizing and participating here at the RELAY for LIFE are.
Sometime latter I learnt the exercises and after a week, or maybe a few days, many of the post-op and post-medical chronic problems I’d developed where rectifying themselves. Ontop of that I was feeling unbelievably calm. The changes were significant and very real. I read the main Falun Dafa book Zhuan Falun that explains the principles of the practice and the changes to the body when practicing. And from that I found there was only good in the practice.
Shortly after I returned to the bush to resume studies at the University of New England in 2001. Many people remarked how well I was looking, and I was feeling good in many respects but not right in others. A P.E.T scan revealed in early April of that year cancer had returned and lodged in my bowel. A successful operation followed. As soon as possible I resumed the exercises and again found its rejuvenating nature. Beyond that I was discovering much more to the practice and was experiencing many wonderful things. From that point on my health has been getting better and better with no reoccurrence of the cancer thanks to nothing but good food, the odd check up at the Melanoma clinic at the Prince Alfred Hospital and the Falun Dafa practice that continues to amaze me. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Its returns are ten fold.
My best wishes to everyone here this weekend. My sincere sympathy to those who’ve lost loved ones to cancer. My deepest respect to those fighting the good fight. My best wishes and enthusiasm for those running and cheering. And many thanks to the good hearted people organizing the event and who are a part of the Cancer council body. Many people are in debt for the good work that you have done and that you continue to do. Thankyou.
