A former Chinese diplomat, who earlier this month was granted a permanent protection visa to remain in Australia, has flown to the United States.
Chen Yonglin left on Tuesday for Los Angeles, where he will attend a US Congress hearing “to testify about Falun Gong and human rights abuses in China”, The Australian newspaper reports.
“My major job is to disclose the nature of the Chinese Communist Party and what is happening about the facts of Chinese policy to the Falun Gong.”
Mr Chen, 37, was granted a permanent protection visa two weeks ago, six weeks after abandoning his post at the Chinese consulate-general in Sydney.
He has claimed there is a network of 1,000 Chinese spies operating in Australia and their duties include monitoring Falun Gong.
The spiritual movement is banned in China.
Falun Gong last week denied it was bankrolling Mr Chen to speak at functions organised by the movement.
