Statement by “Global Mission to Rescue Persecuted Falun Gong Practitioners” Regarding the Trial of Three Students of Qinghua University

According to outside reports as well as our own organization’s verification, the Global Mission to Rescue Persecuted Falun Gong Practitioners wishes to make the following statement regarding the upcoming trial of three Falun Gong practitioners who are students of Qinghua University. The trial is scheduled to take place in Beijing on January 9, 2004.

Intellectuals, especially young intellectuals, are the treasure of their times. History has proven that they often play the roles of front-line soldiers and the voices of righteousness because of their innocence, their passion, open-mindedness, and their pursuit of justice and beautiful ideals for all people. In China today, there is a group of young highly-educated people who follow the principles of Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance and exercise peaceful and rational and behavior. They are precious all the more because they are students of Qinghua University, an institution well-known as a cradle for outstanding scholars. In the past four years, as the brutal and absurd persecution against Falun Gong in China has been destroying the morality of the masses and attacking a gem from the brilliant Chinese civilization; it has also been killing the young people who are the treasure and hope of our time.

Three young students, Yu Chao, Chu Tong and Wang Weiyu, all from Qinghua University, are scheduled to be tried at Chaoyang District Court in Beijing on January 9, 2004. They are being put on trial because they practice Falun Gong and refuse to give up their belief in Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance. All three were detained and subjected to brainwashing, mistreatment and torture for at least one year, and their attorneys will not truly defend them in Beijing’s ‘kangaroo court’ but will be present only to uphold the facade of justice for the dictator’s regime. Before these three practitioners, sixteen others, including Bai Rongchun, Yao Yue, Liu Zhihai, Meng Jun and Wang Xin, who graduated from or worked at Qinghua University, were already secretly sentenced to three to thirteen years in prison. Moreover, the persecution of scholars has not only been going on at Qinghua University. We have learned that the faculty and students of Beijing University have experienced similar persecution. The total number of practitioners secretly sentenced to prison is yet unknown. The unreasonable persecution against intellectuals who pursue noble moral standards is destroying the nation’s future. The trial of such people is desecrating man and putting people’s conscience on trial.

According to statistics compiled by Global Mission to Rescue Persecuted Falun Gong Practitioners, in the past one year alone, 417 faculty members and students at 178 institutions of higher education, including Qinghua University, Fudan University, Beijing University, Chongqing University, and Dalian University of Technology, were sent to brainwashing classes, labor camps or detention centers. Out of those 417, 44 were faculty members or students from Qinghua University. Practitioner Yuan Jiang, who graduated from Qinghua in 1995 with a degree in electronics, was tortured to death by authorities in Lanzhou City. At present, the number of Falun Gong practitioners in China confirmed dead from torture has reached 857, and this is only the information that could be obtained under the iron filter of the Chinese government’s information blockade! According to a report from the Hong Kong Human Rights Information Center, since July 1999, at least 300 faculty members and students at Qinghua University have been prevented from enrolling in school, discharged from school or their working position, detained, or sentenced to labor camps or jails.

The persecution of Falun Gong is genocide, and also the murder of the common people’s conscience. In China, all students, from elementary school to the Ph. D. level, are victims of this persecution. They have been sent to brainwashing classes, labor camps, and detention centers. Some are tortured to death, and others are mistreated to try to make them give up their belief; faculty members and students who are Falun Gong practitioners are fired from their jobs or expelled from school and pressured or tortured to try to make them give up their dignity and betray their own conscience by supporting the persecution. In this unprecedented disaster built upon lies, high pressure, and brutality, all Chinese people, including members of the “610 Office,” government officials, court officials, public prosecutors, police, and medical personnel are forced to betray or sacrifice their professional ethics and human conscience and act indifferent or stay silent in the face of this brutal persecution. Sometimes these people are even forced to assist the evildoers. From this perspective, this persecution can be described as a “Genocide of Conscience” or an “Ethoscide” of the whole nation.

We urgently call for justice-loving people in the academic, legal and judicial world in and outside of China to join efforts in resisting this absurd, vicious and illegal show-trial of three young Qinghua University students, Yu Chao, Chu Tong and Wang Weiyu. Use your voice of justice to support the students of Qinghua University and all other students and common citizens in China and to uphold their right to believe in Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance, and to protect and cherish the future and hope of the nation.
