Awaiting Final Call From Immigration Department on Asylum For Elderly Falun Gong Couple

Media Event:

When: 11:00am, Tuesday, 18 March 2003
Where: Front Lawn, in front of the Parliament House, Canberra
What: Appeal to Immigration Minister to re-consider the elderly couple’s refugee application.

SYDNEY (FDI) – Due to the overwhelming concerns from domestic and overseas
members of Human Rights organisations, sympathetic politicians and Falun
Dafa practitioners regarding the Wang couple’s case, there is hope that
there will not be any hasty deportation.

Background:
Mr Wang Juntao, 66 and Ms. Wang Liluan, 62 were due to be deported on 11 March
2003. Due to their lack of English and being given wrong information, they missed
the deadline to apply to the Refugee Review Tribunal after their plea for a
protection visa had been rejected by the Dept. of Immigration. The couple are
currently being held at Sydney Villawood detention centre, and are scheduled
to be deported anytime according to the immigration office.

Mr Wang has already been arrested and tortured to unconsciousness, his brother-in-law
has been persecuted to death, his brother has been in a labour camp and his
son was fired as a police officer because of his parent’s practice.
